Detailed description

What we need you to do:

  • Visit people, their families and carers living with a terminal illness, as agreed with the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
  • Provide one-to-one support for the terminally ill person and their family to facilitate a discussion around the wishes of the person in relation to their care now, in the future and in their final days.
  • Provide a listening ear during the discussion and for up to three sessions after.
  • Provide emotional support for the patient and family during the discussion.
  • Write a brief summary on the support provided after each visit, highlighting any actions to follow up and email it to the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
  • Keep the Volunteer Services Coordinator informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection with the terminally ill person, carer or family, either in person or by phone
  • Attend group events and training sessions for Marie Curie volunteers
  • Attend individual support sessions with the Volunteer Services Coordinator as required
  • Represent the Marie Curie Service positively to those using the service

What skills or experience do you need?

  • Commitment and reliability - able to keep to appointments and volunteer for three hours a week
  • Patience, empathy and emotional stability
  • An understanding of the importance of confidentiality
  • Willing to be flexible and operate within the boundaries of the role
  • A friendly and sensitive approach
  • Excellent listening skills and an ability to build a rapport with others
  • Respect for individuals, regardless of their race, gender, culture, religion, disability, sexual orientation and marital status

Please note that this role is currently carried out virtually but will move to face to face in the Somerset area when guidance allows.
